Video: Andros Townsend scores a thunderous free kick to give Newcastle the lead

Newcastle United need all the points they can get if they hope to remain in the Premier League next season. Drawing against Crystal Palace and former manager Alan Pardew, it looked like the Geordies would need something special if they wanted the three points. With a free kick about 25 yards from goal, Andros Townsend delivered.

The 24-year-old Townsend placed a perfect shot into the top corner which left Palace keeper Wayne Hennessey with no chance to make the save. The goal gives Newcastle the hope they can put some space between them and bitter rival Sunderland, who drew today at Stoke.

Not long after Townsend scored, Palace was awarded a penalty when Moussa Sissoko inexplicable put his hand up and made contact with the ball inside the box. But Palace was denied when backup keeper Karl Darlow guessed correctly and stopped Yohan Cabaye’s penalty attempt. Newcastle held on and won, keeping them out of the bottom three, for now.
