Watch: Germany and Italy trade second half goals in the Euro 2016 quarterfinals

Germany searching for their first ever victory against Italy in a major tournament were given a big boost when Mesut Özil gave Germany a 1-0 lead midway through the second half. But the lead was short-lived when Italy converted a penalty following a Jerome Boateng handball.

Germany was finally able to go one up, however, when the Italian defense failed to spot the run of Jonas Hector who received a pass from Mario Gomez. Hector played the ball back across the face of goal to Özil who put the ball past Buffon.

13 minutes after Germany took the lead, they saw their advantage disappear when Italy was awarded a penalty. Boateng awkwardly threw his hands up when defending a header which the ball then deflected off. The defender Leonardo Bonucci took the penalty and put it behind the outstretched arms of Manuel Neuer.
