Tiger Woods hasn’t played a big tournament in nearly a year. Recently, the 14-time major winner sat out the US Open due not having his body ready to play.

Still today, Woods has stated he can’t commit to any future tournaments at the moment.

“I’m still progressing, I’m still getting stronger; I’m excited about what has transpired so far,” Woods told reporters Wednesday at the Quicken Loans National tournament that he hosts and that benefits his foundation.

“I’ve gotten stronger and it’s just recovering from day to day. Has anything bad happened … that’s one of the things. I’m sore and it’s about trying to recover the next day. I just need to still get in, I guess, more golf shape, try to hit more golf balls, things of that nature. So I’m still working on it, I’m still progressing so far, and I just wish I could be here and play and be out here and get it done. Just miss playing.”

Since his 2008 ACL surgery, Woods has missed eight major championships. That number could rise to nine if he misses The Open in three weeks. If Woods were to miss The Open, it would be the first time in his career his missed three straight major championships.

Overall, it’s been 10 months since Woods last played in a tournament, the Wyndham Championship last August. In that tournament, he tied for 10th.

However, less than a month later he took a step back and had a second microdisectomy surgery on his lower back. The first was on March 31st, 2014. In October, he had another back surgery.

The last time Woods spoke publicly on May 16th, he said he hadn’t played 18 holes on consecutive days since his surgeries last year. However, today he said he finally got to play 18 holes on consecutive days and much more.

“It’s about four, five days in a row, it’s about me playing 36 holes daily, getting up to speed and playing,” Woods said. “I’m not quite there yet. I’m trying to get there, I’m trying to get there as fast as I can, but I’m trying to do it right at the same time. As you know, I’ve pushed through a lot of injuries and rehabs before. Trying to do it correctly at this time.”

Woods hasn’t ruled out competing at The Open at Royal Troon in three weeks just yet. Before The Open even tees off, Woods is still leaving the door open for the Greenbrier Classic in two weeks.

At that point, there’s only a couple tournaments left during the 2015-2016 regular season PGA Tour, and that includes the PGA Championship from July 28th to the 31st.

“I need to get to a point where I can be competitive out here, I need to practice and play,” Woods said. “That’s a totally different scenario. I’m sneaking up on both things, but the first thing first is I need to get to where I can pretty much do anything off the golf course first and then challenge myself through practice, which I’m doing, and then eventually build up to where I can play out here and compete.”

Overall, the world of golf would love to see Woods back. However, if Woods were to come back too soon and stumble, that may not bode well for him in the future.
