10) West Germany vs Hungary – 1954 World Cup Final
It’s certainly not the biggest comeback in terms of what happened on the scoreboard, but “The Miracle of Bern” belongs on this list for a number of reasons. West Germany came back from 0-2 down against Hungary to score three goals, the last of which coming from Helmut Rahn in the 84th minute, to win 3-2 and lift the World Cup trophy in the 1954 World Cup Final. Now, for the context of why this comeback is so special: It’s hard to believe now, but Hungary was the great world soccer power at the time. They had been unbeaten for 31 games, won the Olympics, and became the first team outside Britain and Ireland to beat England on home soil. They were so good they were dubbed The Golden Team. Not only that, but they had previously thrashed West Germany 8-3 in the group stage of the tournament. For West Germany, the upset victory helped to bring the country together after World War II as it was the first time the German anthem was played at a global sporting event after the war.

We begin the countdown with two of the most famous individual performances in NBA history. Tracy McGrady scored an unfathomable 13 points in 33 seconds to bring Houston back from an eight point deficit in the final minute against the Spurs, even capping it off with a buzzer beating three for the win. As far as one-against-the-world comebacks go, it might only be topped by Reggie Miller’s heroics (or the Knicks’ choking) in the 1995 NBA Playoffs, when Miller scored eight points in nine seconds. Miller gets the nod, if only because he has a 30 for 30 documentary made in his honor.

Some comebacks only require one victory. Others might require four victories in a row to overcome a three-game deficit. But a comeback that requires EIGHT consecutive victories? Now that is something special. That’s exactly what Team USA did in the 2013 America’s Cup to hold on to the oldest trophy in sports, winning the series 9-8 over Team New Zealand.
6) Liverpool vs AC Milan – 2005 Champions League Final
One night in Istanbul. It’s a game that will forever live in the annals of Liverpool Football Club and the Champions League. AC Milan built a 3-0 halftime lead thanks to a goal from Paolo Maldini and two from Hernan Crespo. Liverpool responded by scoring three goals in six minutes in the second half, with tallies coming from Steven Gerrard, Vladimir Smicer, and Xabi Alonso. Goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek then became the hero as he stopped Andriy Shevchenko’s tying penalty attempt to finish off the legendary evening.
