During Sunday’s Blue Jays-Red Sox game at Fenway Park, Boston starter Steven Wright accidentally hit Toronto first baseman Chris Colabello in the head with a pitch. Colabello was alright and able to stay in the game, and Wright immediately apologized.

Before the two teams met again for Monday’s 11 AM Patriots Day clash, Colabello found a surprise in his locker at Fenway Park from Wright – a bottle of liquor.

“Steven decided that he was going to send over a gift,” Colabello said, moving his clothes and uniform out of the way to show a large bottle of liquor sitting underneath.

“He didn’t have to,” he said Monday as he was getting ready for the annual Patriots’ Day game. “I’m sure that’s not cheap, too.”

That’s a nice gesture from Wright, and one Colabello was clearly appreciative of.

“He went above and beyond in my eyes,” he said. “It was pretty obvious there was no intent. You could see by his reaction.”

Incredibly, Colabello was fine after the beaning. He remained in the game, but wasn’t in Monday’s lineup. After the game, he told Sportsnet about the conversation he had with Toronto’s trainer.

“I gave all the answers to all the questions before they asked them,” he said in the clubhouse after. “As soon as they got out there, I said, ‘I’m good.’ And they’re like, ‘You should stay down,’ and I was like, ‘I know, I’m just taking my shin guard off.’ Then I said, ‘I’m at Fenway Park, we’re in Boston, it’s Sunday, it’s the day before Marathon Monday, it’s my hometown, it’s the (fourth) inning.’ I was really aware of what was going on. There was never a sign to me that anything was wrong. I said, ‘I’ll be honest with you, I promise. I wouldn’t mess with something like this.’”

Hopefully, concussion symptoms don’t surface in the coming days for Colabello – just because he’s OK now doesn’t mean he’ll be OK tonight or tomorrow.
