Barry Bonds may be coming back to the MLB.

The Miami Marlins are reportedly considering bringing in all-time MLB home run leader as their hitting coach reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

As Heyman notes, the Marlins have been discussing a move for weeks.

Team higherups have quietly been discussing this possibility for weeks.

Bonds, known as a brilliant tactician, has worked as a special spring instructor for the Giants on occasion. It isn’t known whether he’s willing to move across the country for such a hitting coach job, but he has been working on brandishing his image and has a keen love of coaching.

Frank Menechino is expected back, but the Marlins would have two hitting coaches to accommodate Bonds.

Bonds, of course, has an asterisk beside his records due to his involvement with PEDs. Nonetheless, he’s a solid candidate for the position. Bonds has a career .444 OBP and knows a thing or two about hitting-  even if his achievements are largely tainted.

The fit with the Marlins is kind of perfect. They’re an organization known for making and saying wild things, and Bonds hiring would fit that mindset. Who knows, two years from now when the club inevitably fires manager Don Mattingly (as is tradition), perhaps we’ll see manager Barry Bonds. I’d pay to see that.

Bonds landing a gig wouldn’t be surprising, as he wouldn’t be the first slugger with links to steroids to secure a job. Mark McGwire, who held the single-season record for home runs before Bonds broke it, was hired as the St. Louis Cardinals hitting coach in 2009, and currently holds the same title with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Steroids may keep you out of the Hall of Fame, but it doesn’t keep you out of the game.

Here’s hoping the Marlins make the hire, and we see a different side of Bonds.
