With the New York Yankees looking to hold on to a lead in the ninth inning, Starlin Castro turned a clutch double play to help bring the Yankees closer to a win in Detroit. Despite the tense situation, Castro was just doing what he does while blowing a bubble with his gum in the heat of the moment.
It is pretty normal to see ballplayers blow bubbles with their gum during the course of a game, but this is perhaps the first time I can recall seeing a player blow a bubble during a play like this. At the plate waiting for a pitch? Sure. Manning a base on the infield during an at-bat? Yep. Standing in the outfield as a batter steps up to the plate? Naturally.
While taking a relay from your second baseman to quickly relay to first base in a bases-loaded jam and a two-run game in the ninth? Nope. That is a new one for me.
Personally, — and I am embarrassed to even admit this — I cannot blow a bubble with my gum to save my life. And here is a major league infielder doing so while turning a critical double play. Add this to the list of reasons why I am sitting behind a keyboard discussing and reacting to baseball players and not actually playing baseball.
The Yankees did hold on for the 5-4 win Thursday night.
