Hold your Spaceballs jokes, please. The Orix Buffaloes of NPB have introduced their 2016 uniforms, and they seem to have been inspired by Richard Karn’s get-up from Home Improvement for some reason.
That’s right – they are plaid, and they are spectacular.

That’s quite a bit of plaid there. You do have to give them credit for uniqueness and originality, because the likelihood of another team in baseball anywhere in the world wearing plaid uniforms as anything more than a one-off is quite low. Maybe these uniforms are inspired by the 100 year anniversary of the 1916 New York Giants who wore the same plaid uniforms?
Those Giants finished 86-66, good for fourth in the National League and seven games off the pace set by the Brooklyn Robins. So I guess we can assume where the Buffaloes will be finishing in the Pacific League next season?
Or perhaps the Eugene Emeralds of the Northwest League, who ran a Portlandia Night promotion in 2015 and wore plaid flannel jerseys?
But blue and pink flannel? For the whole year? That’s a whole new ballgame.
