Kipnis

At many Major League Baseball stadiums, one of the promotions is a mascot race around the warning track. In Washington D.C, Presidents race for glory. In Pittsburgh, The Pirates Pierogies sprint for the crown. In Cleveland, it’s a bunch of hot dogs with condiments on them.

Well, that’s how Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis shoulder checked a hot dog with ketchup on it.

Ketchup got out to an early lead Wednesday after knocking down two of its biggest rivals in Mustard and Onions. But the hot dog got a little to cocky and began to celebrate before crossing the finish line. Jason Kipnis took notice and Ketchup no longer had the lead.

Mustard chased down Ketchup and the two were tied as they began to round home, but Ketchup eventually won the race, and rightfully so, while Onions finished third.

This isn’t the first time a mascot has let a lead get to its head during one of the various MLB in stadium mascot races.

Last season in Atlanta, Braves’ catcher A.J. Pierzynski took advantage of his intimidating size during the tool mascot race:

A.J. Pierzynski: 2, screw driver: 1, paint brush and hammer: 0.

Rather than a player taking out a mascot, the Reds’ mascot race nearly clobbered Cubs’ star first baseman Anthony Rizzo and third baseman Kris Bryant in April of 2015.

Last but not least, the Easter Bunny apparently isn’t the biggest fan of the Nationals’ racing Presidents…

So if you’re looking into a summer job as a racing mascot at a Major League Baseball stadium, you have officially been warned.
