Bryce Dejean-Jones, a shooting guard for the New Orleans Pelicans, was shot and killed at around 3:20 a.m. Saturday while attempting to break into a Dallas apartment, police said. He was 23 years old.

According to a report from Dallas police, an officer arrived to find Dejean-Jones dead on the scene. Dejean-Jones had reportedly kicked down the door of the apartment and had entered. As a result, the male resident of the apartment grabbed a gun and shot Dejean-Jones. Justin W. Waldrop, a reporter from Fox 4 in Dallas, is reporting that Dejean-Jones was looking to enter the apartment of an “estranged acquaintance” and ended up going into the wrong apartment.

Police have yet to name the man who shot Dejan-Jones and said that Dallas Police Homicide is looking into the matter. Dejean-Jones was born in Los Angeles on August 21, 1992. He spent his four-year college career at three different school, playing at USC from 2011-2012, UNLV from 2012-2014 and finished his career at Iowa State.

After going undrafted, Dejean-Jones signed with New Orleans in January after spending the first part of the season in the Developmental League. After playing 14 games with the Pelicans, Dejean-Jones signed a three-year, $2 million contract. A week after signing the contract, Dejean-Jones was ruled out for the season with a right wrist fracture. He averaged 5.6 points and 3.4 rebounds per game for his NBA career.
