Ray Allen, a 10-time NBA All-Star and two-time NBA champion, has not stepped foot on an NBA court since Game 5 of the 2014 NBA Finals. After playing 31 minutes in Miami’s elimination game against the San Antonio Spurs, in which he completed just one of his eight field goal attempts, Allen entered free agency and ultimately decided to not accept any offers to continue playing during the 2014-2015 season. With the Heat floating around .500 this season, the Heat reportedly have a standing offer to Allen to make a return if he feels up to it.

From Ethan Skolnick’s report via The Miami Herald;

According to several sources, the Heat has not only had a standing offer to Allen to return to the team ever since the 2014 offseason, but it made additional overtures as recently as this summer.

Allen, however, has never bit.

Allen made the decision to sit out the 2014-2015 season after entering free agency following the 2013-2014 season with Miami. At the time of his decision, Allen left the door open for a possible return in the 2015-2016 season.

“Over the past several months, I have taken a lot of time to deliberate what is best for me,” Allen said in a news release in March 2015. “I’ve ultimately decided that I will not play this NBA season. I’m going to take the remainder of this season, as well as the upcoming offseason, to reassess my situation, spend time with my family and determine if I will play in the 2015-16 season.”

Allen’s decision made it clear he would not join an NBA team to join the second half or playoff push, but that could be what the Heat are hoping for from him this time around. Allen, in all likelihood, has played his final NBA game, and there is little left for him to prove in terms of his career.

He won a pair of NBA championships, so Allen (now 40 years old) is not an aging player chasing a ring. And the Heat likely are not a team that will offer one last chance to win a ring this season. If nothing else though, Allen has an option to return to the league if and when he decides to jump back in the saddle one last time.
