Sad news out of the University of Dayton Flyers basketball team, as reports indicate that 20-year-old center Steve McElvene has passed away at his family home on Thursday.

The local Allen County (Ind.) Coroners Office announced the news of his death taking place at 11:19 a.m. on Thursday. According to their press release, an autopsy is being performed and results should be know later on in the day.

As a 6-11 center, McElvene was expected to be a major contributor to the Flyers team in the future. He had to sit out the 2014-15 season as a partial NCAA qualifier, but was able to practice with Dayton all season long.

This past year, as a redshirt freshman, McElvene became a force inside and set the school record for blocked shots (55). He also averaged 6.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game in his lone season on the court for the Flyers.
