With the focus of the football world locked on Chicago and the NFL Draft on Thursday evening, the defending college football national champions had some not so positive news leaked down south.

Alabama defensive line coach Bo Davis will leave his position on the coaching staff led by Nick Saban as allegations of recruiting violations start to gain traction. According to a report from The Tuscaloosa News, Davis is expected to be fired or be given a chance to resign. Alabama has reportedly been going through an internal investigation and has kept the NCAA apprised of the findings. The extent of the alleged violations has not been reported, so speculating just how damaging this could be to Alabama would be unwise at this time.

Davis joined the Alabama staff in 2014 for his second stop with the program. He had previously been on the Alabama staff from 2007 through 2010 before accepting an opportunity at Texas for three years. Davis was the coach of one of the top defensive lines in the nation last fall, a dominant force that helped pave the path to a national title run for Saban and the Crimson Tide. Alabama’s defensive front manhandled much of the competition when locked in, and dominated Michigan State in the College Football Playoff national semifinal before being put to the test against Clemson in the national championship game. His departure amid controversy may not be a great look for Saban’s program, but it is expected Saban will be able to manage to find a suitable replacement, whether by promoting from within or hiring from outside the program.

If ever there was a perfect time for a college football program to have some bad news dumped, Thursday evening just hours before the NFL Draft gets underway and while the head coach is set to do an interview on national TV is probably about as good as it gets.
