Baylor lost to Yale today in yet another 12 vs. 5 seed upset. Both teams played a rather clean game (okay shooting, bench scoring, limited turnovers) so there wasn’t much low hanging fruit for reporters to really focus on as Yale just was more efficient offensively than Baylor. That’s not really a sexy story though so one reporter chose to see if he could dig into the 36-32 rebounding advantage Yale had over Baylor. Taurean Prince was in no mood to entertain the question.
Answering the question of how did Yale out-rebound Baylor, Prince wasted no time replying with:
“You go up and grab the ball off the rim when it comes off, and then you grab it with two hands, and you come down with it, and that’s considered a rebound. So they got more of those than we did.”
My favorite part of this snarky exchange is Prince doesn’t just give this amazing answer, but he actually twice physically demonstrates the act of a rebound, just in case it wasn’t clear to this reporter.
Interviewing losing players and coaches can often lead to snippy exchanges like this. Some of it is being in a frustrated mood to talk after a loss and often it’s just the peppering of rather dumb questions. Why did Yale have more rebounds? Probably because Yale only had 23 missed shots compared to Baylor’s 38 missed shots, but Prince’s answer works just as well.
