Oh, Boston College basketball. What happened? A conference champion as recently as 2005 and NCAA Tournament team as recently as 2009, the Eagles program has fallen on disturbingly-bad times.

Their no-good, terrible 2015-2016 season came to a merciful end Tuesday night with a 88-66 loss to Florida State in the first round of the ACC Tournament, which also happened to be their 19th conference loss in 19 tries. Not only that but between the men’s basketball and football team, the school did not win one ACC game the entire year.

Dennis Clifford came to Boston College in 2011 with dreams of helping turn around the moribund program. Instead, he’s suffered through five years of bad basketball that’s only gotten worse with each season. In his five years with the program, the team won a grand total of 52 games.

With his college career now over, Clifford was asked following Tuesday night’s game what his best memory of playing basketball at Boston College will be. His answer was….unbelievably sad.

“Going out to eat.”

It looks like Clifford wanted to say something more. Perhaps something eloquent or heartfelt to explain what it meant to fight alongside his teammates. Instead, he mustered a simple anecdote anout the only place he could find pleasure in his day and said more about the state of BC basketball than 1,000 words could have.
