Duke football defensive end Danny Doyle recently learned he would be getting a scholarship with the Blue Devils, and he was informed of the news in a rather unique method: He got a call from his dad during a team meeting.

Here’s the set-up: Duke is going through a regularly scheduled team meeting with head coach David Cutcliffe. During his address to the team, in which Cutcliffe reminds the players time is already winding down to the start of a new football season, Cutcliffe’s phone begins ringing. Rather than put it on silent and move on, the head coach of the Blue Devils answers it.

“Danny, it’s for you,” Cutcliffe says. Little did Doyle know, it was his parents on the other end of the phone, and they were about to deliver their so the good news.

Doyle’s parents had already been informed from Cutcliffe their son was going to receive a scholarship, so Danny was the last to know. As is typical with these kinds of announcements during team meetings and team activities, Doyle’s teammates were there to applaud and cheer the news as well. It is stuff like this that reminds you that there are good things happening in the sports world, even in the often troubling sport of college football.
