When Urban Meyer took over the Ohio State football program in 2012, he hit the ground running and has not looked back.So far he has lost just four games in four seasons with the Buckeyes, and won 50 games and the 2014 national championship in the same timeframe. His incredible success in Columbus is almost enough to make some forget Meyer was likely a hall-of-fame coach before he started roaming the Ohio State sidelines, but a recent tweet indicates Meyer might be one who’s still looking back at his past a bit, and particularly looking back at a former quarterback turned SEC Network analyst in Tim Tebow.

Meyer previously flourished at Bowling Green and Utah, and arguably enjoyed the greatest success of his career as the head coach at Florida, winning two BCS Championships with the Gators. One of those even came at the expense of Ohio State back in 2006.

Ohio State certainly is not hiding the fact they employ a coach with a wildly successful history, nor should they. It is a great recruiting tool to employ arguably the most accomplished active head coach in college football. However, with all the success Meyer has had with the Buckeyes, it does not make much sense to reflect on those prior stops when you have four great seasons in Columbus to point to. That is why the following tweet from the official Ohio State football account is so puzzling.

Huh?

In case you were in a coma during the mid-2000s, that is legendary Florida Gators quarterback Tim Tebow touting the merits of his former coach Urban Meyer, and correspondingly, the Ohio State football program. The same program who he helped defeat in the 2006 BCS National Championship with 39 rushing yards.

Not only is it a strange sight to see Tebow helping sell recruits on the Buckeyes as a Florida alum, it’s also odd when you consider that Tebow’s currently a college football analyst for ESPN’s SEC Network. He is a paid member of the media being used as marketing material for a school that is not even his alma mater.

If you are bewildered by this whole thing, do not worry, you are not alone. The response on Twitter was understandably incredulous.

Ohio State literally had 12 NFL draft picks from this year’s draft who they could have featured here, including some who played big roles in their 2014 national championship. Instead, they went with a player who has not had a relevant football moment in almost five years, and never played for the program. I guess this just goes back to the old adage: If you can’t beat them, integrate them into your marketing scheme.
