When will athletes learn from the mistakes of their peers? Apparently former NFL wide receiver Josh Morgan never learned the lesson of Plaxico Burress — you know, not to shoot yourself in the leg with your own gun.

However, that’s exactly what Morgan did and now he’s facing misdemeanor chargers as a result, according to Pro Football Talk. Morgan’s unfortunate incident was first reported by TMZ, with the site noting that Morgan accidentally shot himself while trying to clean his gun in is Virginia home.

Morgan last played in the NFL with the Chicago Bears in 2014, but had a seven-year NFL career with the Bears, San Francisco 49ers and Washington Redskins before not making it out of the offseason with the New Orleans Saints this past season. He totaled 209 receptions, 2,558 yards and 12 touchdowns over a seven-year career.

What will separate Morgan from Burress is the location of the incident and the ownership of the gun. Not only was Burrress inside New York City, he didn’t have a permit for his gun. Morgan was the owner of this gun and therefor won’t face felony charges after injuring himself stupidly.

Maybe this will be another wake up call for athletes — take better care to not mess up the very tools of your trade.
