It’s not unusual to hear of NFL players showing up to workouts overweight this time of year. This is the tail end of their offseason when things start to pick back up before the season starts again, and clearly some players take better care of themselves than others.

Karlos Williams fell underneath the category of players who showed up to workouts overweight, much to the dismay of Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan.

But, the running back had a unique excuse for his weight gain. He was supporting his pregnant wife, who has been eating more, as he explained:

“It definitely is a first, but I like to eat, and then her being pregnant gave me an excuse to eat, so eating anything and everything. She’d wake up one or two o’clock. “I want a snack.” Well, I’m not going to sit here and watch you eat because I don’t want you to feel bad, but it’s back to football. She’s getting back to working out herself, so kind of motivating each other, feed off each other’s energy, and we’re getting ready for camp.

Not only is Williams a good guy for supporting his wife, but he’s also smart for using it to his advantage. I mean, who doesn’t like to eat? Plus, he’s already not the starting running back, so he might as well pack on a couple of extra pounds and be a bruising short-yardage back, or a really good blocking back.

If Philip Rivers experienced weight gain like Williams did during all of his wife’s pregnancies, he might look something like Jared Lorenzen. That probably wouldn’t go over well in San Diego.

Williams has time to get himself in shape, but it sounds like the sooner he does it, the better.
