Washington Redskins cornerback Josh Norman tried his best to remain with the Carolina Panthers following a breakdown in contract talks, according to the Washington Post.

Josh Norman’s surprising departure from the Carolina Panthers unfolded quickly, resulting in the star cornerback inked a massive five-year, $75 million deal with the Washington Redskins. According to the Post, Norman’s agent Michael George wanted more money than the Panthers were willing to offer and didn’t let his client know. Norman expected to remain with Carolina and was “blindsided” by the news. He reportedly offered to fire his agent and re-sign the franchise tag, but it was too late as the Panthers already rescinded the tender offer.

“As a last-ditch effort, Norman called the Panthers to find a resolution. He said that he would fire his agent and sign the $13.9 million franchise tender, according to a person with knowledge of the situation, but the paperwork to rescind the franchise tender had already been filed to the league. Many on the Panthers’ coaching staff weren’t aware of the move either, according to two people with knowledge of the situation. They even questioned whether there was something beyond football that caused the team to move on from its top cornerback.”

It sounds like Norman wasn’t aware of the negotiations going on between his agent and the Panthers, and waited just too long in an attempt to return. George reportedly gaffed on the contract negotiations, which makes it no surprise Norman quickly hired Ryan Williams to represent him and deal with his new contract.

Norman clearly wasn’t ready to move on from the Panthers and just missed out on amicably returning. Still, he did well in signing a huge deal with Washington.
