Peyton Manning's beer, Oatmaha

Breweries in Denver and Indianapolis collaborated on a canned beer to honor the retired Peyton Manning. The beer is called “Oatmaha”, and was brewed by Denver’s Factotum Brewhouse and Indianapolis-based Tow Yard Brewing Company.

The beer will be released on Friday at Factotum’s taproom at $15 per six pack. Manning himself isn’t featured on the beer cans because of legal reasons, but the beer is a clear nod to the former Broncos and Colts quarterback.

Factotum co-owner Laura Burns called the naming of the beer “cheeky and simple”. Here are some more details about the brew.

Oatmaha contains oats to represent the horse-themed mascots of the two teams in which he’s played for (Colts and Broncos) during his professional career. To define Indiana, the brewers incorporated corn, while sage expresses Colorado.

Bruns and her brother Christopher, who co-owns Factotum, are originally from Indiana and moved to Colorado for college. A love of beer and Manning planted the seeds for the idea.

“Wouldn’t that be cool that once we get a brewhouse going, we would make a beer in his honor?” she said.

The beer clocks in at 6.7% ABV and also has 38 IBU. And like every commemorative beer we see nowadays, it’s a pale ale – because nothing is less offensive than a pale ale.

Manning might not exactly be on the Oatmaha bandwagon, given his Budweiser plug after the Super Bowl in February. But if he wants to try it, he’s more than welcome to for free.

Bruns said she’s not sure if Manning has tried Oatmaha yet, but if he hasn’t, they’ll be on the house if he stops by the brewery.

“We do have a sixer of the Indiana version, a sixer of the Colorado version and an Oatmaha T-shirt for him if he ever wants to stop by,” she said.

I’d try it. I wouldn’t go out of my way to try it, but if it was there in front of me at a bar or a store or a party, why the hell not?
