Johnny Manziel was questioned by police early Saturday morning after he got into an altercation with his girlfriend, CBS News reports.

Manziel wasn’t arrested. The police reportedly assembled an information report on the altercation. That report wasn’t yet completed in the initial aftermath of the incident.

This isn’t the first time Manziel and his girlfriend had an altercation which resulted in police intervention. In October, Manziel was pulled over by police after fighting in his car with his girlfriend, Colleen Crowley. In that case, it was reported Manziel and Crowley were arguing when she reportedly threw his wallet out of the car. That act prompted Manziel to stop his vehicle. They both admitted to drinking. Crowley had scratches on her arm from the incident, but both drove away together — no charges were filed.

Without a full police report, it’s hard to draw firm conclusions in terms of what exactly caused this latest altercation. Therefore, to criticize Manziel for yet another offseason incident is unfair at this point. There weren’t any charges and Manziel wasn’t arrested. It is reasonable, however, to conclude that Manziel and Crowley may be best served by not seeing each other for a period of time. The relationship, at least from an outsider’s point of view, doesn’t seem healthy.

Manziel, who received support from Cleveland Browns icon Jim Brown earlier this week, is not likely to remain with the franchise. Relocation is almost certain to occur for him at some point, a transition in and of itself. That part of Manziel’s future was already going to require a sorting-out process, with or without a personal relationship.

Now, it’s even more apparent that Manziel has bigger things than his football career to deal with.

UPDATE: It was revealed later on Saturday that Fort Worth police used their Air One Unit helicopter to search for Manziel, due to concerns raised about his well-being. He was later determined to be safe, but this added dimension to the night’s events will only generate more questions about Manziel’s state of mind and, ultimately, his future — not just as a professional athlete, but more centrally, as a person in need of help and a stabilizing influence.
