Thanks to a sign and a Bobby Ryan goal, this kid is getting a puppy!

During the Ottawa Senators’ 3-0 win over the New York Rangers, Ryan scored with 20 seconds left in the second period. While it might seem like just another goal, for Cole Jansen, the score meant his family is getting a puppy.

Cole created a sign which read “Bobby, dad said if you score we get a puppy.” The chances of that happening seemed fairly slim. Ryan is a decent goal scorer, but was riding a hot streak with three goals in his last four games. He was bound to slow down eventually. Thankfully, the hockey gods wanted Cole and his family to get a puppy.

Cole told TSN “it’s taken about three months.” Ryan himself said he saw the sign in warmup and heard some of the interview on the scoreboard.

“I wanted to get the poor kid a dog,” Ryan said. “I couldn’t really hear what was going on, I couldn’t understand much of [the interview]. But I heard I was buying (another dog) if I scored another one, or something like that. That was a fair deal. I would have done that for them. I saved myself some money at least.”

In retrospect, Cole’s dad Ryan said he should have picked a less talented Senator player.

“They’ve been bugging me for months to get this dog and I thought, ‘Hey if I make a bet and they lose, at least I’m scot-free,’ Cole’s dad said via NHL.com. “I just shouldn’t have picked such a talented player like Bobby Ryan, I should have picked someone else.”

So there you have it kids – if you want a pet, just create a sign, bring into a sporting event, and pray the player you chose scores a goal so you can guilt trip your parents into getting you the aforementioned pet. Sounds easy enough, right?.

Cole his naming his puppy, a Pomsky, Bobby, and that’s entirely fitting.
