Chicago Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw released a statement on Wednesday, apologizing for using a gay slur in Tuesday’s 4-3 loss to the St. Louis Blues.

“I am sincerely sorry for the insensitive remarks that I made last night while in the penalty box. When I got home and saw the video, it was evident that what I did was wrong, no matter the circumstances. I apologize to many people, including the gay and lesbian community, the Chicago Blackhawks organization, Blackhawks fans and anyone else I may have offended. I know my words were hurtful and I will learn from my mistake.”

That’s a different tune from what Shaw said earlier. He copped out of taking responsibility when he told Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune he wasn’t sure what he said following the game.

“I mean, emotions are high, I really don’t know what’s said,” Shaw said. “I was obviously upset with the call being that late in the game (as) it doesn’t give us a chance to tie it up.”

It seems Shaw knew he would face discipline from the league and apologized to avoid a harsher penalty. He’s been getting justifiably killed online for using a slur and if he continued to play dumb, it would have been an even worse look for him, the Hawks, and the NHL.

The Blackhawks commented on Shaw’s actions, saying they were disappointed and hoped to use the incident as opportunity to educate players.

“We are extremely disappointed in Andrew Shaw‘s actions last night. His comments do not reflect what we stand for as an organization. We are proud to have an inclusive and respectful environment, and to support various initiatives such as the You Can Play Project and the Chicago Gay Hockey Association. We will use this opportunity to further educate our players and organization moving forward, so that we all may learn from it.”

I’d like to believe Shaw is being sincere in his apology, but since he avoided the issue initially, it seems he’s just sorry he was caught. It’s a shame Shaw thought the slur was appropriate to use. Despite the apology, hopefully, the NHL disciplines him in some form, to show the rest of the league comments like his won’t be tolerated.
