Kevin Spacey in Space

That headline probably reads like drunk Twitter Mad Libs, but it’s true. Kevin Spacey will be attending the Florida Panthers game on Saturday night against the Detroit Red Wings in a customized Cats jersey with the number 1738, the number from Fetty Wap’s “Trap Queen”. OK, this needs some explaining.

Right as the Panthers began a franchise long 12 game winning streak, they began to hand out a sweatshirt with Kevin Spacey’s head floating in space to the team’s best player that night. Why that, after last season handing out an army style dress gray jacket? Only the team, and Spacey, knows.

The Panthers actually began selling #SpaceyInSpace sweatshirts right after the fad took off, with part of the proceeds going to Spacey’s charity. Then early in February, Spacey taped a video that appeared on the Jumbotron at the BB&T Center honoring the new fad.

Why the number 1738? Why Trap Queen? The Panthers play that song in the dressing room after every win, and they for only the fourth time in franchise history have hit 40 wins, so they’ve heard it a lot.

And now, after the sweatshirt was worn on SportsCenter and Spacey himself talked about the craze on the Today Show, Spacey has teased that he’s heading down to Sunrise for an appearance in person.

The tease is great, but the Miami Herald confirmed that he is in fact coming to the game on Saturday night.

Normally, journalists should be unbiased, but I am a Florida Panthers fan, so I have the full right to say this is amazing. Super amazing. The only thing better than #SpaceyInSpace… #SpaceyInSpaceRat!

Two of the most bizarre traditions/fads in hockey combined into one, for a franchise just climbing its way out of the mire.
