So this is all kinds of awkward.

Canada shutout the Czech Republic 3-0 in an exhibition game to open the IIHF Men’s Worlds championships in Prague on Tuesday. The team was led by Buffalo Sabres center Ryan O’Reilly who scored the game-winning goal and was named the player of the game. What was his reward for the honor? A keg of Pilsner’s beer, which is not the most appropriate gift considering O’Reilly’s history with alcohol.

O’Reilly was arrested back in July for driving while impaired. According to a report, an intoxicated O’Reilly drove his truck into a Tim Horton’s and fled the scene. He abandoned his vehicle and traveled by foot before being caught by police. He was charged with driving a motor vehicle while impaired and failing to remain at the scene. O’Reilly is still awaiting trial, which is set to begin in July.

So yeah, it’s not the most appropriate thing to give a player who’s facing charges for driving while intoxicated a keg of beer to celebrate being named the player of the game. The tournament could have given a keg to pretty much any other player and there would be no issue. Give one to O’Reilly and it’s laughably embarrassing.

How about we make sure someone else takes the keg home?
