The world lost an icon on Thursday when it was announced that legendary musician Prince passed away at the age of 57. Prince had an amazing career that spanned more than 40 years. He was an incredibly unique individual, who lived life his own way, leading to plenty of great stories and special moments.

Many are paying tribute to him following his death, including AMC Theatres, who announced today that Purple Rain, the rock musical Prince starred in 1984, would be returning to theatres across the U.S.

Showing Purple Rain is a great way to honour Prince’s career. It will expose both a younger generation who’s unfamiliar with his work to his supreme talent, and will please the older crowd who just want to see their favourite musician at his peak.

Prince wasn’t just a gifted musician, but he was also an actor, who developed the concept of the film. Purple Rain was a rock musical that showcased Prince’s talents wonderfully. He won an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score for the soundtrack of the same name, which is widely regarded as one of the best albums of all time. Purple Rain was an instant classic and a box office success, grossing $68.4 million against a $7.2 million budget.

AMC is set to screen Purple Rain in 87 AMC theatres across the United States from Saturday to Thursday. It will also be shown in 80 Carmike Theatres. You can find the full list of participating theatres here. If you happen to be in the Minneapolis area, you can watch the movie for free outside the Twins stadium tomorrow.  For those who want to see Prince at the height of his powers, I suggest seeing him on the big screen one last time.
