Italian soccer has been rocked by betting and match-fixing allegations before, and another Serie A scandal may be on the horizon thanks to some questionable betting activity.
That activity surrounds the Frosinone-Napoli match per an ESPNFC report and betting patterns surrounding a particular sequence of events that could transpire..
At question? A string of bets on one exact player from Frosinone being sent off and Napoli winning the game:
Three betting companies — Intralot, Eurobet and Goldbet — all noted large sums of money being placed on accumulator bets that involved one Frosinone player being sent off and Napoli winning the game.
That’s a huge red flag if we’ve ever seen one in the world of much more open betting in European sports.
It may have been pure coincidence, but it’s hard to not notice that Frosinone’s Mirko Gori got sent off after just 13 minutes of the match. Gori kicked a ball at Napoli’s Lorenzo Insigne as he laid on the ground after being fouled, earning himself a red card for the action.
Napoli would go on to win the match 4-0.
Of course, Napoli being in second place in the table and Frosinone being in the relegation positions could also have widely contributed to the scoreline. However, that specifics of the bet and the increased wagers are certainly unusual.
All betting on any player from Frosinone being sent off was suspended before kickoff, which means no payouts on the action have been made to date.
