Burger King is apparently trying to terrify its customer base this Halloween. The chain is offering free Whoppers to the first 500 people that show up to select stores after 7 PM dressed as clowns.

I’m sure that’s going to go over well – a parade of clowns rolling into Burger King on Halloween for free burgers.

Thankfully, the promotion is only available in select markets at select locations.

On Tuesday, October 31st, from 7PM to close, the first 500 guests that come to select BURGER KING® restaurants* near Miami, Boston, LA, Austin and Salt Lake City dressed as a clown get a free WHOPPER® Sandwich. …Valid for the first 500 guests. One WHOPPER® Sandwich per person. Validity of clown costume to be determined by BURGER KING® restaurant personnel in their sole discretion.

That’s the most evil Ronald McDonald knockoff I can remember seeing.

The clown thing makes sense, considering the positive reaction to the remake of It in September. But given last year’s freakout over creepy clowns in a variety of areas across the country, is encouraging people to dress as clowns (of the terrifying variety, of course) for a free burger really the best idea?

A note to parents out there – if your child is afraid of clowns, don’t take them to Burger King for a Halloween night dinner or dessert. They might be traumatized for life.
