This story doesn’t come from Idaho, but it is Alberta, which is close enough.

TaterGrams is now selling personalized potatoes with messages on them that you can mail to friends, family, colleagues, worse enemies, etc. The company’s founder says these special spuds are for those times when a card just won’t do.

“I’m sure you get cards from people, whether it’s your birthday or anniversary,  and when you get the card, it’s nice. But then the average person just throws that card away,” Wayne Rempel said in an interview with CBC Edmonton’s Radio Active.

“But imagine if you have something on a potato. You wouldn’t forget that.”

“And yes, eventually you will have to throw that potato out — it won’t last forever — but you’re probably going to remember that experience of getting something odd and wacky in the mail.”

I’d certainly remember if/when someone sent me a potato through the mail instead of a card, and I’d probably forget the message and instead remember that someone sent me a potato through the mail instead of a card. But then again I don’t live in Alberta.

Some popular messages are very painful puns, including ‘Lets get mashed’ and ‘I only have eyes for you.’ There’s also more straightforward messages and potatoes with stickers on them for when words aren’t enough.

“It’s basically a potato with a message on it. It’s actually that simple.” said Rempel, still unaware of the irony in his new line of work. In case you’re wondering, Rempel has a side job as a car salesman, in case you thought selling potatoes with funny messages and googly-eyes on them was a good business plan.

“I’ve had a few people asking me if we can do a Christmas card sort of thing, and absolutely. Whatever you want to say in under 130 characters, we can put it on a potato,” he added. Then why not just send a tweet with a potato picture in it? You’ll have more space.

Anyway, you now all know where to look in case sending your friends a personalized potato is what suits your fancy instead of sending a card.
