After 80 years, the board game that we know and love, and in my case, the caused some heated arguments among family and friends, is going to make wholesale changes regarding their game tokens.

For all this time, we have been used to playing with such tokens as the race car (my favorite), the dog, the top hat and wheelbarrow among others. Now, Hasbro is leaving it to the players to vote on the game tokens we will be using for potentially the next 80 years.

In addition to the eight current game tokens (cat, dog, thimble, race car, battleship, boot, top hat and wheelbarrow), 56 new game tokens are available and eight with the most votes will be included in future Monopoly games.

Some of the new tokens are very conventional and are simply updated versions of current game tokens, like a motorcycle, monster truck, NASCAR stock car and Formula 1 car for the race car. Others consist of modern-day items that we use like the computer and mobile phone. And other tokens are simply virtual and steeped in social media and technology, like an actual hashtag, and emojis like the “smiley face” emoji and “crying with laughter” emoji.

As far as the eight I would personally choose. First off, I’m a traditionalist and would want to keep the current eight tokens. But I also realize that Hasbro has to sell games and connect to a more modern audience. And considering I’m pretty sure 90% of those playing now don’t know what a thimble is, it may be time for an update.

First off, the two animals are staying. The cat and the scottish terrior that are currently in the game would stay. Sure, there are other animal tokens like the horse, T-Rex, tortoise, penguin, fish, rabbit and rooster, but nothing can replace the cat and the dog.

The mobile phone, computer and television are three things that most of us cannot live without every day. I need all three of these things to do my job, much less use them in everyday life. Ignore the fact that the phone looks like what Paul Heyman carried in a wrestling ring in the early 90’s these are three important devices we all use almost every day and get my vote in the new Monopoly.

The Transportation Tokens

If my beloved race car needs to be replaced, a race car needs to be represented in this game. The closest comparison to a 1930’s Indy Car is a Formula 1 type race car. I had considered the NASCAR stock car but the F1 car looks better and is much faster. And since the airplane is so important to us both personally and as a means of transporting goods, it gets included as well.

The bunny slipper doesn’t really fit in any of the other categories but thought it was a nice replacement for the shoe. Everyone wants to wear slippers and stay in on a cold and rainy day. You can even wear bunny slippers while you’re playing Monopoly.

So go ahead and get voting. There are a lot of different options so there’s something for everyone. You can vote for up to eight options and voting ends January 30. What would you choose for your ideal Monopoly game?
