The next time you go to a church service, perhaps you should think twice before partaking in the post-service potluck. At least that is likely the thought process for some unsuspecting parishioners of a Catholic church in Bloomington, Indiana.
According to a report in the Indianapolis Star, a 74-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly bringing marijuana-laced cookies to St. John’s the Apostle Catholic Church last May.
Parishioners took part in what they thought was a delightful treat, only to see six people head to a local emergency room after eating the cookies. The Indy Star report puts what happened next like this:
Six congregation members told police they had eaten one of the cookies, with three reporting the cookies tasted “saltier” than normal. All six people tested positive for cannabinoids.
Their symptoms included nausea, sluggishness and lethargy.
It has taken nearly a year to complete the investigation, but a warrant was issued for his arrest after an interview and a search of the suspect’s home were complete.
He maintained his innocence in the matter, saying he baked the cookies like normal on Saturday night and took them to church. A search turned up a bottle of hash oil, though. In fairness, it’s actually not hard to imagine a 74-year-old man confusing a brown bottle for some other type of oil while baking, but it’s unfortunate all around.
The man turned himself in to police after hearing of the arrest warrant and faces charges of criminal recklessness and possession of hash oil, per the Star.
So, let this be a lesson to folks out there, you can’t even trust the food at your local church service to be normal these days. Maybe he just thought his fellow parishioners needed to mellow out a bit.
