Jordan Spieth

The 2016 U.S. Open kicked off on Thursday morning, but it was not long before mother nature foiled the tournament’s plans. Thunderstorms caused play to be halted not once, but twice during the opening rounds at Oakmont.

Jordan Spieth was one of the golfers unfortunately caught up in the storm’s interference. After getting called off the course the first time, tournament officials hurried Spieth and other golfers back out for a few quick holes before the second storm hit. This undoubtedly annoyed Spieth and his peers, because if there is one thing golfers do not like, it is being rushed. In addition to the frantic rush brought on by weather, his group also received a warning for slow play, according to For The Win.

All that tension, plus the added frustration of only shooting par on the day, led Spieth to boil over when his solid shot on the 17th hole took an unlucky roll.

In terms of tantrums this is about as tame as you can get. Spieth did not chuck his clubs or even unleash a stream of profanity. However, microphones picked up the 22 year old loudly lamenting, “You’ve got to be kidding me. How is that in the bunker? That is such crap.”

You can feel Spieth’s frustration, but it is hard to not giggle at just how subdued his rant was. Knowing mics were around may have kept him from voicing what he really wanted to say, but that never stopped Tiger Woods.

Despite the G-rated nature of his reaction, folks on Twitter still found reasons to view this light display of emotion as a negative reflection on the young golf phenom.

Golf elicits such odd reactions, but thankfully the professional media members were able to properly contextualize Spieth’s supposed meltdown.

Let’s hope the rain stops soon so play can resume, for everyone’s sake.
