Call it a message from the afterlife, if you will.

University of Michigan golfer Nick Carlson received a congratulatory note from none other than Arnold Palmer days after the golf icon passed.

Palmer wrote a letter to Carlson, which was postmarked on September 8, to congratulate the young golfer on finishing in the top four at the U.S. Amateur at Oakland Hills Country Club. Thanks to the reliability of the United States Parcel Service, Carlson did not receive his letter from Palmer until October 7, a little more than a week after Palmer passed away.

“I understand that you are a serious student of our great game of golf, as well as a good student and player at the University of Michigan,” Palmer wrote. “Keep up the good playing. I wish you the very best in whatever pursuit you choose to follow.”

“I’ve never been able to say that I knew Mr. Palmer or met him in any fashion, and to get that 10 days (after his death) was pretty special,” Carlson said. Carlson does have a very small tie to Palmer. Carlson worked at a golf course over the summer that was designed by Palmer, but the two never crossed paths. Until now, in a sense.

A letter like that from a true legend deserves to be preserved and displayed in the best way possible. So for now, Carlson is making sure it is close by.

“It’s framed and above my desk in my room. I get to look at it every day.”
