Cody Gribble either didn’t learn from Chubbs Peterson in Happy Gilmore, or is just a brave, brave man.

The 26-year-old PGA golfer encountered an alligator — because Florida — during first-round action of the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill.

Golf.Com’s Kevin Cunningham explains more:

Gribble was strolling down the 6th fairway that runs along the water Thursday at the Arnold Palmer Invitational when he spotted an alligator sunning itself along the fairway’s edge. At this point the obvious course of action would have been to change direction and avoid any interaction with the reptile, but Gribble chose a different path.

Rather than running away screaming like most of us would have, Gribble calmly walked up to the alligator and tapped its tail. Gribble’s fearless move worked, as the gator jumped into the water hazard.
