After putting himself in position to win this weekend’s Tour Championship and take home the FedEx Cup, Rory McIlroy had tough sledding to get the victory Sunday.
After shooting a six-under 64 during Sunday’s final round of the Tour Championship, McIlroy ended up missing a series of putts that nearly cost him the tournament win and FedEx Cup championship. Such a loss would have cost McIlroy $9.5 million. One putt, however, ended up saving the day for McIlroy.
The 64 Sunday put the Irishman in perfect position to win the tournament Sunday. He headed into the playoff with the chance to bring home a big-time payday. McIlroy’s first chance at a win came during a birdie putt on the first playoff hole.

After the first miss, McIlroy had another chance to clinch the title. But he missed that as well.

Ryan Moore took the upper hand in the third playoff hole, but McIlroy made a big-time putt to send us into a fourth playoff hole. That was where McIlroy FINALLY took control.

A birdie putt clinched the title for McIlroy. It’s the first time the Irishman has won the FedEx Cup. He will take home an $11.5 million payday, $10 million from the FedEx Cup and $1.5 million for the Tour Championship. That’s pretty sweet after the number of missed big-time putts.
