The greatest football highlight I have seen this month is not an amazing catch, a tackle-busting run, or a big hit.

It is a punt.

The kick in question comes from Raby High School’s game against Morris Community High School in the semifinals of the Illinois state high school. The Raby punt boots the ball from deep in his team’s own territory, and it lands before midfield. Then it takes a favorable bounce and begins to roll. But instead of just rolling a few feet, it keeps going and going and going. Soon the Raby players begin waving the ball on… and somehow that works. The kick eventually settles at the Morris seven-yard line.

Incredible.

Now obviously there’s something somewhat awry here, whether it’s a slanted field, a much-too-slippery turf or an extremely powerful wind. But props to the Raby players for having the presence of mind to wave on the ball. They earned their team an extra 30 yards of field position.

As it turns out, Raby lost the game 43-8, but at least they’ll always lay claim to one of the craziest punts anyone has ever seen.
