Only a few days before his huge fight with C. Takam this Saturday in front of 70,000 spectacles in Cardiff, Anthony Joshua looks forward to the next big challenge of his career; Winning for the first time the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award.
AJ: Why a favourite?
According to Betway Insider, Anthony Joshua odds-on favorite since last April when he managed to knockout the great boxer Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley stadium. An important victory which as Alan Alger highlights “the public won’t be forgetting his monumental victory over Wladimir Klitschko too quickly and it’s that bout cemented his place as favourite”.
However, this is not the only sign of success for the British Boxer to feel optimistic; 2017 it’s not an Olympic year, a fact that according to the experts’ increase Joshua’s chances of winning the prestigious award. Contrary, 2017 is a year that boxing came on top of the media coverage. If the heavyweight champion secures the award, he would be the first boxer to achieve that since 2007.
Nearest contenders in this run are Chris Frome and Lewis Hamilton. Betway’s Alan Alger believes that the British Boxer is a safe betting choice. “AJ is a very solid shot to be crowned this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year”, he says.
BBC Sports Personality of the Year event has been first staged in 1954 and Henry Cooper was the first boxer who won SPOTY in 1967. This year the event is hosted at the Echo Arena in Liverpool on Sunday, 17th of December in front of an audience of 11,000 people. Tickets are on sale from 13th of October.
In 2016, tennis Player Andy Murray claimed the SPOTY Award for the third time (2013,2015,2016) after an outstanding year having taken Olympic Gold and the Wimbledon title.
