Anthony Varvaro, who played for the Mariners, Braves and Red Sox, and had been most recently with the Pawtucket Red Sox, is retiring from the sport to chase after another passion: becoming a police officer.

The Staten Island native informed the team of his decision earlier this week so he could join the 102 members of the incoming class of recruits for the New York Port Authority Police Department. Varvaro had his best pro years with the Braves in 2013 and 2014 as a set-up man, but suffered a season ending arm injury at the start of the 2015 campaign. He was a 12th round pick by the Mariners out of St. John’s in 2005.

He ends his career with a 7-9 overall record in 166 appearances, with a 3.23 lifetime ERA over 183.2 innings, all in relief. His contract had an opt-out clause in it in case he was called to the Port Authority Police job, which he had always been pursuing.

Good luck Mr. Varvaro.
