Josh Donaldson's bat hit home plate umpire Chris Segal in the head Monday.

We’ve seen bats go flying out a player’s hands before, but usually they wind up going into the stands. On Monday, Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson lost control of his bat, and it flew right into the head of home plate umpire Chris Segal.

That’s a scary moment. While umpires wear a mask, padding, and shin guards, they don’t wear helmets. Just the sound of wood on noggin is sickening.

Segal immediately dropped to the ground and stayed there for a while, but after a few minutes, he got back to his feet with a smile and stayed in the game. This happened on only the third batter of the game, so he had a long night left. But it’s impressive that he was able to persevere through this. Hopefully there are no further effects for him.
