We may try to stick to sports here as much as we can, but there are times when the political headlines cannot avoid a collision with the sports world. On Thursday, Arizona Senator John McCain made sure those two worlds collided as he looked to explain his strange line of questioning during a hearing in Washington D.C.

McCain was among the senators on a panel interviewing former FBI Director James Comey about potential Russian hacking and influence on the Donald Trump administration. These types of hearings can get a little long-winded as time goes by, and it can be easy to lose focus as the hearing gets closer to its final moments. And if you stayed up late the night before watching baseball, then your brain may not be running optimally. Such was the case for McCain as he got his opportunity to ask questions to Comey.

McCain’s questions were presented to Comey in a jumbled and unorganized fashion, which led to brilliant analysis on Twitter using Breaking Bad memes by people like me…

Later, in an attempt to explain why his questions came across disjointed, McCain joked and said he should not have stayed up so late watching the Arizona Diamondbacks.

“I get the sense from Twitter that mt line of questioning today went over people’s heads,” McCain said in a released statement. “Maybe going forward I shouldn’t stay up late watching the Diamondbacks night games.”

The Diamondbacks did play a long game (3 hours, 48 minutes to play nine innings of a 7-4 game to be exact) on Wednesday night that started at 9:40 p.m. Eastern and ended around 1:30 a.m. Eastern.

As if Major League Baseball wasn’t already facing enough criticism about the length of games, now they have a Senator joking about staying up too late to watch a baseball game and how it caused his role in the government to not be executed cleanly.

At least McCain stayed up to watch the Diamondbacks pick up a win.

The Diamondbacks did respond to McCain’s explanation on Twitter.

That about sums it up.
