How starved is Amarillo for baseball? The Amarillo Lone Stars were supposed to play independent pro baseball in the Pecos League this season, but that fell through when they failed to reach a stadium agreement with the city. So of course the logical next step was to set up a fantasy season playing made-up games with made-up players on Facebook, as detailed by the Hot Sports Takes blog.
Here’s the announcement the team made in January that the Amarillo Fantasy Lone Stars would entertain their fans with “cyberball” this season. And tickets are free, in case you haven’t gotten yours yet:
The great thing about fake baseball is it comes with a fake budget. So the Fantasy Lone Stars announced a $24 million stadium deal in February.
To be clear, there’s no scamming going on here. The team’s Facebook page has been upfront and clear that this is not real baseball, but instead “a season of what might could be,” which is as ridiculous as it is grammatically incorrect.
For a fake team, they’ve got some high-profile players you might recognize.
One week until Opening Day. Who’s ready for cyberball?
