Last year, fans were hyped at the possibility for the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series because the 1989 movie Back to the Future Part II predicted that in 2015, the Cubs would win and end their what would be 107-year-old streak. They fell short, losing to the Mets in the NLCS and were off by a year as the Cubs won in Game 7 over the Cleveland Indians.

While Back to the Future was off by a year, Parks and Recreation nailed their futuristic prediction and correctly said the Cubs would win the 2016 World Series in an episode from last year.

In an episode from season 7 where (spoiler alert) it’s set three years into the future from the previous season, we see what the cast has been doing with their lives after following them in local government. Huge baseball fan and Parks and Rec creator Michael Schur tweeted the writers successful prediction mentioning that in 2017, Chicago is in a really great mood because of the Cubs winning the World Series.

Well, maybe the north side of Chicago is, don’t know about those White Sox fans on the south side.

Anyway, while this was a great prediction that turned out to be right, it’s not like it was that far fetched. Even by Schur’s own admission, he noticed the Cubs’ farm system and with Theo Epstein, who already crushed one curse with the Red Sox, and Joe Maddon as a World Series winning manager in his own right. Along with the ability to spend hundreds of millions for some of the best players, mixed with some of the best young talent, it’s not a stretch to make that claim. Back to the Future had it much tougher when they predicted in 1989.

But then this was the Chicago Cubs so after 108 years, you never really knew if they were going to win. Even after all the signs pointed that they would be favorites. So kudos to Michael Schur and the Parks and Recreation writing staff for correctly ending a long-suffering streak. Detroit Lions, Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Indians and Buffalo Bills fans among other long-suffering fans are now hoping Schur chooses them to win next.
