Reading Whoopies

The Reading Fightin’ Phils, the AA affiliate of the Phladelphia Phillies, is one of many minor league teams that often roll out themed uniforms over the course of the season. They may have outdone themselves with the uniform they’ll be wearing on August 7th.

Yep – they’re going to dress like Whoopie Pies and changing their team name to the “Whoopies” for the morning game on August 7th against the Akron Rubber Ducks (Indians affiliate).

So, what the hell is a Whoopie Pie? Good question! Let’s let the Fightins explain.

While other regions may claim the Whoopie Pie as their own, the Whoopie Pie is believed to have originated in Pennsylvania’s Americana Region. They were created by the area’s Pennsylvania German communities and have been handed down from generation to generation. Whoopie pies are actually more like a sandwich, made of two cake-like cookies with a cream center.

On the 7th, the Fightins will also be giving away free Whoopie Pies and free seat cushions to the first 2,000 adults at the gates. In addition to those goodies, any fans that arrive before 8 AM (for whatever reason) will get a free hot dog and free coffee.

And just to sweeten the pot a little more, there’s going to be a kegs & eggs beer tasting festival at the MORNING GAME.

Absurd rebranding isn’t any stranger to the Phillies’ minor league affiliates – last year, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (AAA affiliate) branded themselves as the “Cheesesteaks” for a game, complete with “wit” and “witout” caps.
