The 2017 season is quickly getting away from the New York Mets, but at least there is the feel-good story of Tim Tebow to fall back on in the farm system. And don’t look now, but Tebow could be in line for a promotion.

In a brief update from the New York Post, it is suggested the Mets are having conversations about bumping Tebow up from Single-A Columbia to the team’s Double-A affiliate in Binghamton. The change would not be expected to happen until after the all-star break in the minor league season. That means there is time for Tebow to prove whether or not he is worthy of such a jump.

At this point, these are merely preliminary discussions as the Mets think about their long-term future and plan the path for various prospects. Such conversations are not out of the ordinary, but Tebow brings a different spotlight to anything that is connected to him.

We are not naive enough to think the Mets aren’t using Tebow’s baseball dream as a marketing opportunity (for example, I’ve seen a Tebow Mets shirsey in the wild this season), but there is at least a mild case to be made to support the idea of bumping Tebow up a level in the farm system. Aside from the fact he will be able to sell tickets to a new set of fans around the minor leagues in the second half of the season, Tebow has started to find some rhythm at the plate. After a dismal start that was overshadowed by a pair of home runs, Tebow has slowly raised his batting average up to .257. He is clearly not ripping off the leather at Single-A, and he has just two multi-hit games in his last 10 games.

Tebow recently signed a contract extension with ESPN to continue doing analyst work with the SEC Network. That contract with ESPN allows Tebow to continue playing baseball as well, for however long this goes on. Make no mistake, even a promotion in the farm system is not an indication Tebow is on his way to the majors. This is not to say I’m rooting against Tebow (quite the contrary, even as a Phillies fan), but it is more than fair to remain incredibly skeptical this will end up with Tebow playing a game in the majors.

But if Tebow does climb through the minors, maybe other NFL quarterbacks could take note.
