Terry Etim Liverpool traffic

Former mixed martial arts fighter Terry Etim was taken to hospital in Liverpool, England Wednesday after reportedly hurling himself into traffic repeatedly. The 30-year-old Etim fought in 11 UFC matches from 2007 to 2013, but hadn’t competed professionally since a Bellator win over Patrick Cenoble in November 2013. Eyewitnesses told The Liverpool Echo Etim was apparently trying to harm himself Wednesday, running into the street and throwing his body against buses and cars:

Hairdresser Andrea McCullough said: “It was one of the worst things I’ve ever seen. “His friends were running after him and trying to restrain him on the floor but he managed to break free and was running in and around all the cars. He wasn’t trying to harm anybody but himself. He was covered from head to toe in blood.”

Barber Alan Miles said he was having lunch when he heard a bang and “screaming and shouting” coming from the direction of East Prescot Road.

He added: “I went out and helped to restrain the man in a nearby car park, but he wrestled his way out from the people that were holding him down. He had blood all over him and I got a lot of it on my hands as I tried to hold him down

As per Uproxx, Etim was taken to the hospital, detained there, and listed as in serious condition:

Pictures from the scene of the incident show two buses with smashed windshields and blood smears. Police arrived on the scene shortly afterwards and restrained Etim. He was taken to a hospital where he was detained under the Mental Health Act, and is currently listed in serious condition.

Etim was involved in some memorable fights during his time in the UFC, especially the wheel kick knockout he suffered against Edson Barbosa at UFC 142, but he’d been largely off the radar for the past few years after withdrawing from a 2014 Bellator fight following a knee injury. This is a sad way to hear about him again. Here’s hoping things work out for him.
