After being in a coma for a little more than a month, MMA fighter Matt Hughes has woken up.

Hughes, a Hall of Fame UFC fighter, fell into a coma last June after his truck was hit by a train, and his recovery process now is being considered quite the surprise, according to MMAFighting.com.

He is surprising the doctors,” Pat Miletich, another Hall of Fame fighter, said to the website. “He’s making great leaps and he’s no longer in a coma, and he’s improving. It’s going to be a long road. Any type of head trauma at that level, there’s going to be some rehab.”

As it has been previously reported, Hughes attempted to cross a train crossing before a train could pass on the morning of June 16. The train struck the passenger side of his vehicle, which sent the truck flying off to the side and knocked Hughes out due to a blow to the head.

“The [train] engineer said, Matt had stopped on the gravel road,” Miletich explained. “It’s a hill, goes up, it’s a real quick hill that goes up to the railroad tracks. He had stopped, then tried to get across it in time. The train was going almost 50 MPH.

The uplifting update of his coming out of a coma was a long-awaited update during a time of privacy for Hughes and those closest to him. Coming out of a coma still is followed by a rough recovery process, so here’s hoping the next steps in the recovery process go well for Hughes.
