The detective who was investigating gang rape allegations against New York Knicks point guard Derrick Rose died on Tuesday afternoon after being found with a single gunshot wound.

The Los Angeles Times reports Nadine Hernandez, 44, was transferred to PIH Health Hospital in Whittier, where she died at 3:27 P.M. Police were initially called in after a suicide report attempt. Police confirmed to the Times there’s been no determination on whether Hernandez’s death was a suicide or homicide.

While investigating Rose’s rape allegations, Hernandez wrote a letter in support of the alleged victim, asking that the unnamed Jane Doe’s identity continue to have her name concealed from public records. Hernandez wrote anonymity was key for rape accusers to come forward.

As Rose’s civil trial continues, Hernandez’s death is a bizarre turn. On Wednesday, a judge threw out the possibility of a mistrial. Rose’s trial is getting massive media attention, as what happened on the night of the alleged rape is still being determined. Rose isn’t facing any criminal charges, but the chances he will eventually is still possible.

Hernandez being found dead is extremely sad, as 670’s The Score Julie DiCaro notes, she was known “as a crusader for sexual assault victims.” However, it’s unfair to assume her death is connected in any way to the trial or Rose. Until more details drop about what caused her death, assumptions are just that.
