When sports teams or leagues hold events specifically designed to better introduce their sport or team to women, it often ends really, really badly. Remember what Texas A&M did early this summer with their fight song? That’s how these things tend to end up.

So, when the news came out that the Mavericks are hosting an event specifically for women, and the website for the event is all colored in pink text, one can understand the trepidation and fear. But is the event that bad?

Well, for one, it’s an annual event held by the team, which means they’ve gotten better and better with their messaging with time.

This women-only event, held at American Airlines Center practice court and locker room, provides basic instruction on topics including offensive and defensive sets, coaching strategy, as well as a Q&A session with a player and behind the scenes information about workouts and life on the road.

The attendees will also learn about therapy for the players, how a front office makes decisions, as well as speak with the team’s broadcasting crew.

Furthermore, there are no mentions of “fashion” or “manicures” or “recipes”, which is what we usually see with these events.

While these events are more often than not unnecessary, this one is way less patronizing than others we’ve seen this year, so for that the Mavericks get a very tepid thumbs up.
