First of all, Nate Robinson is in the D-League, averaging 8 PPG on about 10 shots per contest. That sounds about right.

Second of all, Nate Robinson can still provide some fun moments.

Here he is last night going between the legs of 7-2 defending center Edy Tavares. And that’s literally between the legs:

That’s amazing. I grappled with analogies for this, and settled on two. It’s either the opposite of Vince Carter jumping over that gigantic French dude at the Sydney Olympics in 2000 (can’t not include that video):

OR it’s the basketball equivalent of one of those stupid chase scenes from The Fast and the Furious where the cars are swerving back and forth under semis on the highway. I remember exactly when I saw that stunt for the first time in the trailer (I think I was in the theater to see Gone in 60 Seconds of all things) and I was totally freaked out.

So this is kind of like that. I think the Carter analogy is better upon reflection, and had Tavares been French, it would have been the perfect sequel.

Anyway, Nate Robinson is 32 now and relegated to D-League status. A similar fate has befallen Ben Gordon, who lit things up with a monster night:

The D-League (soon the G-League) is home to an interesting mix of basketball players. As we’ve seen this season already with Yogi Ferrell (who had 8/7/5 last night in 29 minutes, just saying), it’s the best pro league for players who want a path back or to the NBA.

That hasn’t always been the case, and there’s still more money to be made overseas. But now guys just outside NBA status are there, playing in Delaware and Fort Wayne and other places, for crowds that vary from “not bad, I guess” to “oh wow no one’s here.”

(I saw both in Fort Wayne at various times. Also the Nightmare Ant once handed me some cookies as I disembarked at the Fort Wayne airport, which was nice and terrifying at once.)

So we’re more likely to get highlights like these from long-term NBA vets now. Which is kind of cool. Mostly cool, even. And also probably beneficial in some ways for the younger prospects, aside from having to watch Nate Robinson jack shots.

But it’s also a bit of a bummer, right? Robinson and Gordon were both legit NBA guys for multiple seasons, and here they are now.

Life goes by fast.
